Dr. Ernesto Lira de la Rosa

Life can be challenging and there are times when we could benefit from talking to a licensed therapist. Starting therapy comes with a lot of questions and I want to take my time to demystify therapy and answer any questions you have about our work together. My specialties include working with young professionals, entrepreneurs, professionals in finance, marketing, and advertising. I also work with LGBTQ individuals, people of color, men, and survivors of trauma.

I received my Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. I have trained at various settings in NYC and most recently worked at Columbia University. My training and clinical experiences have allowed me to work in hospitals, universities, community health centers, and nonprofit organizations. I draw from evidence-based approaches to ensure that all my clients receive the care they need. Outside of my clinical work, I also supervise master level clinicians and psychologists-in-training. In addition to private practice, I serve as a consultant to organizations and businesses and help them create programs and policies to support their employee’s mental health and well-being.

My passion in social work includes helping clients explore and understand issues of identity (for example: race, gender, sexuality, class, privilege, etc.) and bearing witness while providing empathy, with the ultimate goal of helping clients integrate past traumatic experiences to increase life satisfaction and overall sense of well-being. I specialize in working with clients struggling with anxiety and depression, substance use, PTSD and CPTSD, and individuals seeking to work on their relationships with others. I work with people within the LGBTQ+ community, queer people of color, and people of multiracial and multicultural/ethnic backgrounds.

I have a MSW from New York University, where I was trained in clinical social work, focusing on identifying and building on strengths, understanding how one’s environment affects an individual’s functioning, and seeking to resolve interpersonal and social problems. My professional training has taken place in a variety of clinical settings, including LGBTQ+ youth crisis intervention/suicide prevention, homeless LGBTQ youth and the homeless community at-large, outpatient mental health treatment in hospitals and community clinics, and other nonprofit organizations. Outside of this practice, I work for The Mount Sinai Hospital in an HIV/AIDS clinic, where I provide psychosocial support and concrete services for patients of the clinic.

We all face challenges in life and they can be overwhelming if not downright defeating. Navigating these challenges can be complex and difficult without support. My approach as a therapist is to meet you where you are in your life and offer a non-judgmental and compassionate space to identify and work toward your therapeutic goals. I strive to instill a spirit of hope and encouragement that change and growth are possible.

Through the therapeutic process, we will identify and develop ways to navigate the obstacles that are impacting your well-being. I utilize a collaborative approach to foster an environment to help you recognize and build upon your strengths. From my perspective, the most important and powerful element in therapy is the relationship between the therapist and the client. It is this relationship that allows growth to happen so that you can make positive changes in your life. Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to work with people with a wide range of disability diagnoses including mental health diagnoses. I also have experience working with young professionals, people identifying as LGBTQ+, and people navigating anxiety and depression.

My passion for working in this field began when I started my B.A. in Psychology at The University of Connecticut. Since completing my degree, I have worked in a mix of clinical and research settings including the University of Kentucky, Rutgers University, and around New York and New Jersey. I completed my M.S. in rehabilitation counseling at Rutgers University and currently hold a license as a mental health counselor (LMHC) in New York State.

The journey toward growth, change, and healing is often a difficult one, but it is one that we don’t need to take alone. As your therapist, I seek to create a warm and containing environment where you feel safe to express your feelings freely, explore parts of yourself and relationships with others, and gain awareness into unresolved issues potentially keeping you stuck.  Within the context of a collaborative working relationship, my goal is to help you discover your own inner resilience, wisdom, and strength, which may have  been dampened by painful or challenging life experiences, in hopes that you will achieve a more authentic and meaningful existence.

I earned my Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology and M.S.Ed. in Mental Health Counseling from Fordham University.  Over the course of my professional career, I has been fortunate to serve a diverse range of clients of various ages and identities, including racial/ethnic identities and sexual orientation and gender identities, providing individual and group psychotherapy as well as therapy with couples and families. My experience as a mental health provider has included counseling students in the Pace University’s counseling center; individual psychotherapy and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) with individuals struggling with chronic mental illness and personality disorders at Gouverneur Health; milieu and group therapy with individuals suffering from severe mental illness at Kingsboro Psychiatric Center; and relational psychodynamic psychotherapy at the National Institute for the Psychotherapies. Most recently, I worked at Woodhull Medical Center, where I provided individual and family therapy services to children and teens suffering from a wide range of mental health concerns as well as other social, academic and developmental challenges in the Child and Adolescent Outpatient Psychiatry Department. I have also taught as an Adjunct Lecturer for the Graduate School of Education at Fordham University and served as faculty and clinical supervisor for Woodhull’s APPIC Clinical Psychology Internship program.
